Gregory (Greg) Nicotero, nascido
no dia 15 de março de 1963 é um fantástico criador de efeitos
especiais, ator e diretor. Seu primeiro grande trabalho em maquiagem de
efeitos especiais foi no filme Day of The Dead, de George A. Romero, lançado em 1985, sob a tutela de Romero e Tom Savini.
Em 1988, juntamente com Robert Kurtzman e Howard Berger, formou a KNB Efx Group, um estúdio de efeitos especiais, e passou a trabalhar em mais de 400 filmes e projetos de televisão. A KNB já ganhou inúmeros prêmios, incluindo um Emmy em 2001 por seu trabalho em Dune, uma minissérie sci-fi do Canal de Frank Herbert em 2000, e receberam um Oscar em 2006 pela realização das maquiagens no filme As Crônicas de Nárnia: O Leão, a Feiticeira e o Guarda-Roupa.
Nicotero afirma que ele começou a tomar interesse em efeitos especiais depois de ver o filme Jaws (Tubarão). Ele explica: "eu
fiquei pensando 'Como diabos eles fizeram isso? Como eles construiram
um tubarão gigante que comia pessoas?' Então, entre esse filme, O
Exorcista, O Planeta dos Macacos, e, claro, todos os filmes de terror da
Universal e depois Madrugada dos Mortos foram praticamente os dois
filmes que fizeram isso por mim".
Nicotero começou sua carreira trabalhando em Pittsburgh, Pensilvânia, aprendendo o ofício de efeitos especiais com Tom Savini e ajudando em filmes do diretor George A. Romero. Enquanto trabalhava no filme de Romero, Dia dos Mortos, conheceu Howard Berger, que se tornaria um de seus parceiros no KNB EFX Group. Nicotero mudou-se então para Hollywood e foi morar com Berger e Bob Kurtzman. Atualmente está trabalhando como co-produtor executivo, maquiador de efeitos especiais, diretor e também ator na badalada série da AMC, The Walking Dead.
